FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX...

Herewith is the post-race report of Mega oval’s club championship event held on 29/05/2021.

THE BREERIVIER KOERIERS STOCKROD CLASS...

Twenty-one drivers pitched up for this, and one knew it would be great... Leon de Jager, Christo Croucamp, Sergio Abrahams, Edmund Bredenkamp, Nastasha Whitehorn, Ehrard Visagie, Stefan Swart, Dirk Bosman, Marco Gericke, Kosie Gericke, Martin Theron, Petrus Ferreira, JP Bredenkamp, Lloyd Scaife, and JD vd Berg to name a few were inthe mix of things... It was great to see the Bredenkamp brother’s back on track again after several years lay off... Petrus Ferreira went well but was involved in a shunt during the event which put pay to his chances... Stefan Swart had a great run in the opening heat, and both he and Leon de Jager are becoming forces to be reckoned with... Ehrard Visagie went like the merry-clappers, and this youngster is showing everyone around the track... Christo Croucamp began well, but also had a mediocre end to his event... Nastasha Whitehorn went very well as usual, and this lady racer was unlucky not to make a top three... Another family affair on track was Marco and Kosie Gericke, with Kosie making his debut at Mega oval... Once all was done it was 1st JD vd Berg, 2nd Ehrard Visagie, 3rd Martin Theron (Nice to see Martin back out on track again after an extensive lay off).

SNAP CHANGE 1660 MODS...

Gavin Fleming, Adrian de Geus, Arno Hougaard, Francois Engelbrecht, Tersius v Tonder, Tersius (seun) v Tonder, JP du Plessis, Jacques du Plessis, Gawie Hendrickz, Kosie Weyers, Gert Ellis, Francois v Rhyn, and Izaan Keller were only a few that were going hell for leather out there... Izaan keller from Oudtshoorn came to join in and was right in there, but could just not make it to the front group, and we know how good he can be... Gavin Fleming had a car that gave problems in the pit area before the event started, and sadly retired from the event half way through heat one... The high flying Kosie Weyers blew his way through and in between everyone only to have a motor blow up in heat two... The Du Plessis cousins had an awesome outing, and eventually the bad luck of Jacques ended... In general the racing was as hard and close as it gets in this class with the finals being one for the record books... In the end it was... 1st JP du Plessis (in a super quick Mini), 2nd Jacques du Plessis, 3rd Tersius v Tonder.

THE TYGERBERG POOLS 2.1 MOD CLASS...

These drivers had a great outing, and put on a brilliant show, Theo Loubser initially went well, but his car packed up during the opening heat... Tersius v Tonder, JP du Plessis, Eugene de Wet, JP Kotze, and Alistair Simpson went great guns right from the start, Kotze had a small problem during the 2nd heat which got sorted and he was back in the thick of it in the finals... Pieter Niemand and Tian Cloete were always there and if any of the above mentioned dropped the ball they would snap it up... Gerard Kloppers was back after he was smashed up at the Wynland, and brilliant for him to see him finish the event... At the end it was... 1st JP du Plessis, 2nd Tersius v Tonder, 3rd Eugene de Wet.

THE DISCOUNT BOARDS & TIMBER HEAVY METAL CLASS...

This was a rumble in the jungle from the get-go... Ruan vd Walt, Jacques Loots (jnr), Wemer vd Merwe, Zack Groenewald, Willie Germishuys, Francois Smit, Hendrik Vos, Hendrik Vos (jnr), and Hans Swart to once again name a few were at each other’s throats from the opening race... As it would be during the opening heat Francois Smit and Zack Groenewald was involved in a scuffle with Groenewald being bumped and rubbed by Smit lap after lap, Smit’s BMW’s front end was so badly damaged that it cost him from completing the event, Groenewald pulled off with car damage, but was able to continue for the rest of the event... Jacques Loots (jnr) was also involved in shenanigans and was sent to the back of the grid in one of the races, he opted to pull onto the infield (I presume he had car issues)... Hans Swart made a welcome return after being away out of the Cape area for a long time, and raced like he’d never left... Wemer vd Merwe, Hendrik Vos, and Ruan vd Walt were right in the thick of it, with Wemer setting the bar very high... Pieter Human is the man on the move in this class, and was right in there with the top names, he himself is now a top name... The leading Ford’s who don’t have the guns to stick with the BMW’s was Cor vd Westhuizen, and Leon de Swardt with Gerdus vd Westhuizen having trouble... When all this chaos was over it was... 1st Wemer vd Merwe, 2nd Pieter Human, 3rd Ruan vd Walt.

THE SKP BOUKONTRAKTEURS AMS CLASS...

Manfred Oehl was the man to catch here, and as per normal cleaned house... Alex Oehl made a welcome return but his V8 flexi packed up on him and couldn’t continue... Johannes Havenga fresh off a great event at George Motor Club was very impressive... However it was really good to have Rian Huisamen and Altru de Klerk both return to racing after lengthy layoffs, both drivers however was right on the button... JD Truter who is the championship leader retired half way during race one, and never returned to the track, this will cost him dearly for championship points... JJ de Wet went well, but it was just not his day... When all was over it was... 1st Manfred Oehl, 2nd Rian Huisamen, and 3rd Johannes Havenga.

THE BREEDE VALLEI TRUCK CENTRE HOT ROD CLASS...

Young Tyron Els was the man to catch, and he is now really getting quick... Elru Viljoen who is leading the championship had to drive like hell to keep up with him, it is however soothing to see that the young blood is coming on strong... Francois Smit was not to be outdone and kept the young ones very honest indeed... Tiaan Louw and Manfred Oehl on the other hand never had great outings as they kept on picking up car issues... Llewellyn Kotze and Carlo de Lang was right in there as well... When all was done it was... 1st Tyron Els, 2nd Francois Smit, and 3rd Elru Viljoen.

THE BLUE STORM HYDRAULICS JNR GOLF CLASS & THE LG TOWING JNR MINI CLASS...

THE JNR GOLF’s..... MJ vd Westhuizen, Wemer vd Merwe (jnr), Jano Koeglenberg, and Jayden Brand were all over each other from the beginning with nothing between them... Bad luck struck Jayden when he had a serious fuel leak which cost him dearly... Alonso Pickard made her debut in the Golf class, and still has a bit to learn as there is now a whole lot more poer compaired to the Mini... Overall it was... 1st MJ vd Westhuizen, 2nd Wemer vd Merwe, 3rd Jano Koeglenberg.

THE JNR MINI’s..... Grant vd Westhuizen, and Jaydee du Toit never left each other’s side throughout the event, at times they were right in between the Golf’s... Pieter and Emma la Grange did very well, and if it wasn’t for a DNF Pieter could have had a top three... Connor Boyes from the Cape Helldrivers made a debut at Mega and hung in there with all of them... At the end it was... 1st Grant vd Westhuizen, 3nd Jaydee du Toit, 3rd Emma la Grange.

THE XTREME PANEL & SPRAY MIDGET A&B CLASSES...

MIDGET “A” CLASS... Schalk Swart, Wessel Rabe, and Dante de Ronde were the men to catch and beat during the event, however Anton Lloyd, and Lammie Kotze were never far behind, with Anton giving them the most hassles... During the one heat Anton ran into a bit of difficulty and ended last, that possibly cost him a top three... As per usual Anchen Lloyd is right on song, and never stands back for the men at all... When the speedsters were done it was... 1st Wessel Rabe, 2nd Schalk Swart, and 3rd Dante de Ronde.

MIDGET “B” CLASS... Francois Botes once again scored a full house of wins, and is in a league of his own, Timothy Paries is the only man at this stage that can beat him, and Timmy made him work a bit... Andre Lotze had a good run for a change, and consistency paid off for him in the end... JJ Whitehorn had a good start to the event, but picked up minor problems towards the end... Schalk Coetzee started off well, but also had issues, this all played into the hands of Andre Lotze... Zim Geldenhuys and Waldo Truter were also in there, and enjoyed themselves throughout the event... When all was done it was... 1st Francois Botes, 2nd Timothy Paries, and 3rd Andre Lotze.

THE TYGERBERG POOLS PINK STOCK CLASS...

All the ladies had tons of fun out there with the Ellis ladies once again being the one’s to beat... Clariska Havenga drove the Anderson Golf, and did very well in an unfamiliar car... Juanita Kuhn who leads the pink stock championship had a difficult event as it seemed as if she was battling with handling issues... Abigail Cope is now right in the mix, and baring for one race was in there with the Ellis girls, havenga, and Kuhn... Mia Kriegler after missing the Wynland was back again in her Golf, and enjoyed herself tremendously... At the end it was... 1st Mia Ellis, 2nd Mina Ellis, and 3rd Clariska Havenga.

THE BREEDE VALLEI TRUCK CENTRE & DISCOUNT BOARDS AND TIMBER NINJA MIDGET CLASS...

Marius Smit and Franco Truter started off as odds on favourites for a one & two at the end, however issues came to plague Franco putting him out for the event... Little Jean Roberts, and JP Human were always in there if the ball was dropped together with Sebastian Swart, and these three kids never did their reputation any harm at all... For the first time we had two young lady racers joining in Lea Havenga, and Clare Ruthenberg. They are only 4 and 6 years old respectively, and had a blast with huge smiles on their faces... Once the kids had their fun it was Marius Smit that ran away with the laurels with Roberts, and Human coming home 2nd and 3rd between the two of them.

THE WEST CAPE SPARES TAP & SPIN CLASS...

Action was the order of the game, with a touch of chaos as well, but this is what the class is all about... during the opening race of the day Pieter Lucas in the Mazda hit the Beetle of Francois Burger on the main straight rather hard resulting in Burger’s race event to end just there, however Lucas and his team worked very hard, and got the Mazda back out on track again... Herman Marx rolled the Escort in pit corner and was out for the rest of the show... Tian Cloete, Francois v Weltsleben, Bronley Dick, and Elton Matroos were in the wars once again, but that is the name of the game... Werner Smit and Martin vd Westhuizen were at each other’s throats for most of the race meeting, with Martin trying to get to Werner, but just not getting there... Reon Erasmus was the new driver with a very neat looking Ford Cortina... Once the tapping & spinning was over it was... 1st Werner Smit, 2nd Martin vd Westhuizen, 3rd Bronley Dick.

THE BREERIVIER STOCK ROD CLASS...

Stefan Swart, Sergio Abrahams, Petrus Ferreira, Nastasha Whitehorn, Marco Gericke, Lloyd Scaife, Leon de Jager, JD vd Berg, Jeandre Visagie, and Christo Croucamp to name a few were in each other’s hair right from the get go... Marco Gericke and Leon de Jager went well in the beginning but had issues as the event went on... The rest of the Lady racers also had a great event with Jeanine Els, Sonica Scaife, and Lelanie Brown giving it their all... Sergio Abrahams also had a small problem in race 1, but went like a rocket ship for the rest of the meeting... Overall results are... 1st JD vd Berg, 2nd Christo Croucamp, 3rd Nastasha Whitehorn.

THE BESSIE BESTER TRANSPORT  1660 MOD CLASS...

Wow, was this a rumble in the jungle, a war from the start with Arno Hougaard, Burger vd Westhuizen, Damian Els, Dirk Bosman, Faan Oosthuizen, Francois Engelbrecht, Francois v Rhyn, Gavin Fleming, Gawie Hendriksz, Gert Ellis, Jacques du Plessis (jnr), JP du Plessis (jnr), Kosie Weyers, Kyle v Dyk, Tersius v Tonder, Quintin Venter, Tersius (seun) v Tonder, and a heap of others going to war, and what a war it was... Damian Ellis had a issue in his first race with the car that caught alight sadly putting him out of the event... Jason Madeira, making his debut in the new car had problems from the opening heat... Justin Brink made a return to oval track after being away for a few years, but the man to catch was Kosie Weyers, he was super fast and set the bench mark very high... Wherever one looked there was fights and battles going on... When the war was over it was... 1st Kosie Weyers, 2nd Kyle v Dyk, 3rd Francois Engelbrecht.

DIE WITHUIS 2.1 MOD CLASS...

Alistair Simpson, Brennon Green, Eugene de Wet, Francois Muller, Jan Mostert, JP du Plessis, Juan Verwey, Tersius v Tonder, Theo Laubscher, Pieter Niemand and the rest went out and raced at full tilt in what was very close racing, and in your face action... Noeg Wanza, had a problem in race 1 when a loud bang was heard, we all thought his motor had popped, but luckily for him that was not the case... Markus Smith had a baptism of fire in his very first outing at Mega... Sean Sinclair was the fastest of the tin top cars, and did very well in general... This class was one quick high speed express train with very fast cars in the mix... When this modified battle was over it was... 1st JP du Plessis, 2nd Brennon Green, 3rd Alistair Simpson.

THE DISCOUNT BOARDS & TIMBER HEAVY METAL CLASS...

Arno Engelbrecht, Emile Lange, Francois Smit, Willie Germishuys, Cor vd Westhuizen, Gerdis vd Westhuizen, Tolla Truskey, Pieter Human, Juan Verwey, Wemer vd Merwe and Michael Swart were the 6cyl men that went to fight it out on track... It was an classic BMW vs Ford show out on track... Lots of tail-gating going on between the BMW boys out there, with nobody willing to step out of line, cause if you did, you would lose plenty of places... Juan Verwey made his debut in this class and had tons of fun out there in his left hand drive BMW... The top two Ford men were Tolla Truskey, and Cor vd Westhuizen, and they were right in between the BMW’s... When the heavies were done it was... 1st Wemer vd Merwe, 2nd Francois Smit, 3rd Willie Germishuys.

THE BREEDEVALLEI TRUCK CENTRE HOT ROD CLASS...

Elru Viljoen, Francois Smit, Hansie Moore, Tyron Els, Manfred Oehl, and Tersius v Tonder were the drivers in this very quick, but noisy class... The fight was on between Hansie, and Elru from the beginning with Francois Smit  right in there... Hansie Moore on a wet track showed everyone why he is a multiple SA champ, with brilliant smooth driving... However in the finals of this class he had a full on dice with Elru Viljoen, with Viljoen coming out at the top... When the hot rodders had done their thing it was... 1st Elru Viljoen, 2nd Hansie Moore, 3rd Francois Smit.

THE SKP BOUKONTRAKTEURS AMS CLASS...

JJ de Wet and JD Truter dominated this class with very close racing between them... Hank Els was super fast in his very-very powerful V8 Chev powered flexi, but had either diff or side shaft issues and retired before the event was done... Manfred Oehl, came out the pit gate in race 1, and broke a prop shaft, and that was the end of that... Pieter la Grange had his flexi stuck in first gear in race 1, but got the car sorted out soon after that... Roger Youngs was always in the mix to pounce on any error that was made... Once the V8 thunder settled it was... 1st JJ de Wet, 2nd JD Truter, 3rd Pieter la Grange.

THE XTREME PANEL & SPRAY MIDGET A&B CLASSES...

Timmy Paries, Juan v Schalkwyk, Francois Botes, Andre Lotze, JJ Whitehorn, Schalk Coetzee, Zim Geldenhuys, and Waldo Truter were the “B” class drivers out on track, but it was all about Botes, Paries, and v Schalkwyk up front with Whitehorn making life complicated for them all... After all was done it was... 1st Francois Botes, 2nd Timmy Paries, 3rd Juan v Schalkwyk...... In the “A” class Wessel Rabe, Schalk Swart, Dante de Ronde, and Andre Schaeffer went like demon possessed madmen after each other, in what was an showstopper of note, there was very little between them... The final was nothing short of brilliant with Rabe chasing down Swart, Swart was determined not to let Rabe past, Rabe did all in his power but couldn’t pass Swart, it was a brilliant drive by Schalk Swart... We welcomed Anton Lloyd back after a long lay off, joined by his wife Anchin Llyod... When the speed demons had settled down it was... 1st Schalk Swart, 2nd Wessel Rabe, 3rd Dante de Ronde.

THE TYGERBERG POOLS PINK STOCK CLASS...

Drama, drama, and absolutely more drama that’s all that one can say... Mia Kriegler, Mia Ellis, Mina Ellis, Juanita Kuhn, Marlee Nel, Ena Visagie, and Charlene Anderson were the ladies that put on a hell of a show... Mia Kriegler’s Golf started to leak oil, and she had to withdraw... The battle was on between Mia Ellis, Mina Ellis, Marlee Nel and Juanita Kuhn for honours... It was however in the final of this class that Mia Ellis and Marlee Nel had a hell of a dice, there was accidental contact between the two ladies exiting turn 1 and Nel rolled the Golf a few times wrecking the car totally, the medics immediately came to her assistance which caused a lengthy delay, I’m glad to report than other than serious arm injuries that Marlee is doing okay under circumstances... Once the drama was over it was... 1st Juanita Kuhn, 2nd Mina Ellis, 3rd Ena Visagie.

THE LG TOWING JUNIOR MINI CLASS & THE BLUE STORM HYDRAULICS JUNIOR GOLF CLASS...

THE MINI’s... Just as in the Pink Stock class there was a fair amount of drama here as well... Jaydee du Toit, Pieter la Grange, Emma la Grange, and Grant vd Westhuizen  put up a great show for one and all... Grant vd Westhuizen had a great run and showed what he is capable of doing in a 1100cc powered Mini... Emma, Pieter, and Jaydee were right in the mix as well... However it was in the final of this class that Emma had steering issues, and while working her wat through pit corner she had the Mini turn in onto the tyres which flipped the Mini up into the air and came down virtually nose first into the ground... I’m happy to report that barring a cut on her one leg that Emma is 100% fine and okay... When all this mayhem was over it was... 1st Grant vd Westhuizen, 2nd Jaydee du Toit, 3rd Emma la Grange... ( Organizers went one lap back after incident at flag ).

THE GOLF’s... Jaco Jacobs, Jayden Brand, Jano Koeglenberg, MJ vd Westhuizen, and Wemer vd Merwe (jnr) were the roll players out on track... Wemer had car issues and battled to keep up, while MJ, Jaco and Jano went at each other the whole event long, Jayden Brand kept them very wary all the way through... In the end it was... 1st MJ vd Westhuizen, 2nd Jaco Jacobs, 3rd Jano Koeglenberg,

THE WEST CAPE SPARES TAP & SPIN CLASS...

The VW Beetles of Rudi Viljoen, Jacques Els, and Francois Burger were at each other’s throats from the beginning with Burger picking up car issues at the beginning of the event... Bronley Dick, Werner Smit and Tian Cloete were the men to beat... Pieter Lucas had misfire problems at the start of the event but by the time we arrived at the final that was sorted out... Elton Matroos in the Cortina was always in the fight but had a motor expire on him in the second heat... Herman Marx missed the first race of the day, but joined in soon after that... When the tapping & spinning was done it was... 1st Werner Smit, 2nd Tian Cloete, 3rd Bronley Dick.

THE NINJA MIDGETS...

JP Human, Jean Roberts, Marius Smit, and newbie Lea Havenga only 4yrs old came to play... Marius Smit did well but sadly had a problem in the last race, and that cost him a first place, Jean Roberts and JP Human were never that far behind, but it was all about Marius, pity about his issue... Little Lea made her debut, and battled out there, but all will improve with time... In the end it was... 1st Jean Roberts, 2nd Marius Smit, 3rd JP Human, 4th Lea Havenga.
